In August 2015, a party of 11 scouts (aged between 14 and 18) and 6 leaders from 7th Epsom Scouts will go to Tanzania to work on community projects with the Tanzanian Scouts. We started fundraising and team building in February 2014.
The scouts pay for themselves on the trip and all organisation and administration is done on a voluntary basis so we incur no overheads. All the funds we raise go directly to the community projects.
PROJECTS PREVIOUSLY UNDERTAKEN:
This will be our 5th trip to Africa, but our first to Tanzania, over a period of 13 years. Previous visits have been to Uganda and in 2003 and 2006, we funded the building of a scout centre in the District of Tororo. This centre is now used on a regular basis for both scouts and scout leader training.
Over the last 12 years in Uganda, we have protected more than a dozen water springs, providing water to many villages (that’s at least 5,000 people). We have built three piggeries for an orphanage, a playground for a town. We have assisted Mayuge District to purchase land for a scout campsite and built both a district administration building and a toilet and shower block on it.
PROJECTS FOR AUGUST 2015:
This August we will be working in two different schools in Tanzania. In one school we will be providing them with the funds to finish off their roof, mend some roof beams and then, when we arrive, plastering and painting the walls.
At the second school we are building three classrooms and a toilet block. These classrooms have already been started so when we get there we will be able to help with some of the brick work, plastering, floor laying and completing the roof. Hopefully, funds allowing, we will be able to finish off the classrooms by buying the desks and chairs for the inside as well.
It’s only a few weeks until we go so please keep looking out for our latest news and blogs here.
